THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has ordered a vigilance inquiry into the charges of financial irregularities raised against Planning Board former member P V Unnikrishnan by Kerala Congress (M) leader P C George. There are two major charges that have been raised by George. One, his activities related to Agency for NonConventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT). George, in his memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, said that as the Planning Board member in charge of renewable energy he had engineered illegal backroom appointments to ANERT. One of the appointments made was that of his wife. Further, Unnikrishnan had collected Rs 25 crore from the panchayats offering smokeless stoves. Till date, George said that the smokeless stoves had not been provided to the panchayats. George said that it was Unnikrishnan's wife who had given the purchase order. Unnikrishnan had also conducted training for candidates, who, Goerge says, were unqualified, in fivestar hotels. These candidates were supposed to conduct a survey of energy needs in rural households. George says that the figures these candidates were asked to collect could easily had been secured from the respective panchayats. The second charge related to Unnikrishnan's links with the Information Kerala Mission (IKM). George said that Unnikrishnan's links to IKM ceased once he submitted his resignation as Planning Board member. But even after the resignation, George charges that Unnikrishnan had taken part in a meeting of the IKM.
