The Sate government will revise the honorarium of panchayat members. The proposal will be placed before the Cabinet for ratification soon, Minister for Panchayats and Social Welfare M.K. Muneer has said.
Replying to questions in the Assembly on Friday, Dr. Muneer said the formalities for the revision of the honorarium had been completed and the revised honorarium would be given after the Cabinet cleared the proposal.
A committee for coordinating the functions of the Urban Affairs and the Panchayats Ministries has been constituted. The committee will hold monthly meetings and the first one will be held in the first week of November.
Engineers will be appointed on contract to overcome the shortage of engineers and overseers in grama panchayats. Preliminary steps have been taken to accord deemed university status to the Kerala Institute of Local Administration. The institute will impart training on the conduct of grama sabhas.
A two-member committee has been appointed to review the staff pattern in panchayats. The norms for expending the tribal sub-plan and the special component plan funds for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes will be amended so that local bodies will face no hitches in utilising the funds within the time frame.
