120 persons being trained to collect garbage

Kottayam: UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT:The segregated garbage dumping point at Nagambadom in Kottayam.
With the much published municipal waste collection through designated dumping points in the municipal area meeting with little success, Kottayam municipality is all set to withdraw the initiative and instead, experiment with door-to-door collection.
According to V. K. Anil Kumar, chairman, Municipal Standing Committee on Health, the new experiment would start on February 25. Initially, the door-to-door collection would be introduced only in Ward 18 (Kanjikuzhy).. Once found successful, this would be extended to Mullankuzhy, Mount Carmel, Devalokam and Muttambalam areas, he said.
Already 120 persons, many of them from Kudumbasree Mission, have applied for the collection. They would be given a one-day training on February 22 , before deputing them for the collection. Door-to-door collection would help to segregate the waste at the source before brining it to the dumping yard, Mr. Anilkumar said.
It was only few weeks back that the Municipal authorities identified 17 dumping points in the town and provided the spots with two garbage bins each, one for the perishable and other, for the non-perishable.
However, the initiative met with a major hurdle as people, even from outside the town dumped the waste without segregating it.
The move is to remove the bins in a phased manner, Mr. Anilkumar said.
